Clearing snow off the roof...
The muni suggested that home owners think about clearing their roof of snow if it reached a depth of 2 feet ..there have been 14 roof failures in the city so far this season due to snow load. So my OH climbed up to check the depth..The fact you can climb up from the garden without using a ladder because the snow is so deep on the ground may have given us a clue..it was up to and in some cases over his hip height..and he is not short. So we spent most of the day shoveling snow (with a break in the middle for a prearranged sledding trip) and guess what's planned for tomorrow. Oh and now we are surrounded by piles of snow so the dog can easily access the roof and we had to dig down to get in through the back door.

Oh my goodness. It did need doing. You'll be able to sleep a bit more easily tonight. Not just sheer exhaustion.
ReplyDeleteThe depth varied between 2 to 4 feet with most areas at 3 feet plus...dense snow is calculated at 25lb per cubic foot- so we were beating the recommended limit of 40lb per square foot by a little more than we realized..oops
DeleteA local geologist also pointed that if we had a quake with that snow load the house would pancake..not a pretty thought so it was worth the effort :0)
We've had a cat on the roof, but never a dog. I'm miffed that we haven't had even a sniff of a snowflake here this winter.

Snow is beautiful to look at, and I like the smell - but I don't envy you, not at all!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have any snow left, and no ice on the river, we've been able to sit outside in the sun four days in a row. It's not very warm though, blankets and winter coats are needed.
