Weather obsession and Moose

The Weather obsession continues...but now it's lovely and warm ! it's between 6 & 7 f (-13 & -14 C ) well it feels warmer honest even if it's relatively speaking lol.
looking here  we see this map of the temperatures around town now (9am in the Morning our time)
Isn't that a great map.

So at least Ski club should go ahead tonight ..last weeks had to be canceled as -5f  (-20C) is their cut off temperature ..the kids range from 6 to 14 and freezing them ruins the fun..you can't bundle them up  much as skiing makes them hot.. but fingers and toes get cold so it's a balancing act.

Yesterday it felt warmer so we charged off to catch a bus into town to visit the Museum but we first had to get past the two moose grazing on tree branches that were between us and the bus stop... never annoy a Moose ..especially Mom and yearling. A kind lady pulled over and gave us a lift for a 100 yards..past the moose and to the bus stop . People are generally very kind and helpful especially when it comes to moose who command respect. An elderly lady who commands respect too, made the local paper this morning with this story  photography is from the ADN as is the story...

Obviously I should carry a shovel :0)

What do you do when it's too cold to play?

Well you could retreat indoors with a good book I suppose, but when you live in Chaos (Can't have anyone over) because your house needs super Spring cleaning (at a minimum) then you visit
The Flylady
and you set to work and shine your sink!
and Gosh darn it she has a point...(and a big thank you to the kind blogger who mentioned her and inadvertently started me off! THANK YOU)
next the cooker was attacked..
and then the kitchen floor..then some kitchen reorganization.
Then the Den was the focus for a little attack (more attacking necessary at a later date).
Yesterday was the girls' room's turn... I large sack of trash later, a much cleaner and tidier room emerged. Yippee
Today I began on our room....just one area mind and then 15 minutes on the bath tub (actually this turned out to be longer than 15 minutes more like 45 as I attacked the edge of tub sealer than failed to seal anything other than grime to the tub edge and had depressed me for ages ...who knew that a window ice scraper would be such an effective goo remover..Now I can relax in a nice clean bath ..lovely.

I must admit the three tub system 'Put Away' 'Throw away' 'Give away' is simple and effective.
As is the invaluable advice of just attack manageable amounts of chaos at a time..i.e. One shelf not the whole closet.

And with this weather forecast ..I think some more chaos clearing is on the agenda ....guess who lives in the East part of town..lol

And now I'm off for a soak in the bath and to look for a Good Book :0)

What do you do with lots of Snow?

Go sledding of course....

And the Dog has to come too....

Good fun was had by all!

And then you walk home.....for an assignation with the Wood stove, Supper and a good book! (or Downton Abbey for the Grown ups ...bliss)

That's our neighbors front fence ...this Winter we have quite a bit of Snow :0)

Cold as Ice

detail from ADN's gallery..see link below. (I think this is a Raven stealing the Sun ?) Ravens and the Sun feature in several Native stories . See here.

We have lots of Snow and the Temperature has fallen ...just right to keep the ice sculptures frozen until we make a trip into town to see them :0)

There is a beautiful gallery of Photos here from the online version of our local paper.

There were a few Beautiful Sculptures carved for New Year and we chatted to one of the Sculptors when we were down town then. She was very pleasant. The ice is bought from the Fairbanks region (Inland with more consistently cold conditions) and taken by the ton from a frozen Quarry pool (Less contamination i.e. clearer ice than that from lakes). It is transported in Trucks to town for them to work on. Tools used include Chainsaws, and Dremel Tools!
.
All in all a nice distraction from the more negative sides to the Weather... I think this may possibly be the first time in Ten years we have to shovel snow off the roof... it's not really the depth of snow (several feet of it) it's the effect if it rains inches next rather than snows...Soppy Snow is heavy...drat and blow it...dry powder snow is fine.(Well so far anyway)

Snow anyone ?

Photo from ADN

We have spare...honest...

7 1/2 inches added last night and it's still gently snowing..if I can keep my camera battery from conking out in the cold I'll try and take some snaps as it's most beautiful.

from an old gravestone

If you hold your nose to the Grindstone
and you leave it there long enough,
Then soon you'll say
there's no such things
as brooks that babble
and birds that sing,
these three will all your world compose,
just you, the stone and your poor old nose.

(from memory so may not be word perfect)
