Other people's blogs

I love other peoples blogs they make me happy, make me sad, inspire me to create, make me dream and think and plan ..which may be a substitute for actually doing anything... but still makes me happy, they introduce me to new ideas, recipes, books, artwork, ways of looking at the world..isn't that lovely

On the downside they consume an awful lot of time that I should really be spending making my home a least vaguely fit to be shared by anyone other than my family who are either incredibly tolerant/ shortsighted/ preoccupied making something (usually that adds to the colorful situation (polite way of saying a mess) that we call home.

I probably can't blame reading blogs for the state of my kitchen ...if I wasn't reading blogs I'd be up to something else..reading a book possibly ..or baking something or trying to knit...etc etc why are all the things that make a mess so much more interesting and attractive than taming the resultant chaos?

Anyway ..I have to confess that my kitchen will never in all likely hood be fit to take photo's of.. to compare anything with anyone else ..or even to allow people a glimpse... I stood in there in naive optimism clutching my camera..when I first began to blog to take a snap for a kind of shared .. My Kitchen today post..and I spotted the cobwebs..oops and the washing up and the floor etc etc I should've grabbed the cleaning materials (industrial strength) but I didn't I just chose another topic...

I think having growing kids, pets (an inordinate supply of) and a disposition that prefers a bar of chocolate, cup of coffee and a murder mystery to housework may mean that my kitchen stays forever under wraps

such is life

  1. Val, grab a cup of tea, I'm gonna be chatty. First of all I wish I could sit beside you, eating a Cadbury bar. Mine would be Fruit & Nut. I know what you mean about the messy kitchen; this is why I apply the "crop photo" application in the photos of my kitchen. Example: The picture of cornbread in the oven that I took--I didn't realize how horrendously dirty the oven was until I took the picture :-) When he was little, my son Alex gave me a coffee mug for Mother's Day with the quote: "We're not messy, we're creative". Also, I've heard it said that an immaculate house is the sign of a misspent life. I agree. As far as blogging goes, I'm not worried about what people think of my pictures, but I'm often shy about leaving comments. I always worry I'm not smart enough to leave a decent response. Silly me.

  2. The first blog I read regularly (about 6 or 7 years ago now) was called My Filthy House. It was written by a female student who house shared. It's no longer there as I imagine they're working now.
Anyway, the title of the blog was no understatement. She was never afraid to plumb the depths in the name of blogging!!
What you need is a good program for cropping your pictures-works wonders for chopping off the cruddy bits. And I wouldn't worry about the kitchen. If you clean one day it'll just get messy the next...

  3. Well ladies love the idea of photo cropping ...just may have to take it to macro even microscopic degrees ...lol

Jodi ..you're welcome for tea anytime and don't mention smart to a person who after reading an anthology of extracts of womens writings looked for more work by the author Ibid ..who I'd never heard of
(Now if wiki had been around then and I'd looked it up there..."Ibid., abbreviation used on scholarly writing meaning "the same place"; used to cite a source already cited in the preceding endnote or footnote" it would've saved a very interesting conversation with a very nice librarian being fixed in my memory.... rofl)

Dawn ...the blog title my filthy kitchen was too close to home ...so I've just scrubbed the floor...dishes next!

  4. You reinforce my long held contention that people who are doing/reading/making interesting things don't always have time to be tidy. And then there's the pets...!
Packing for a major move at the moment is a reminder of just how much "stuff" I have that adds to the clutter.

  5. Mornings minion.. I come from a long line of incorrigible squirrels so I identify with "stuff"..My parents lived through the second world war and My Grandparents, Great Aunts etc lived through two World Wars so not throwing things away was absorbed from birth!

  6. I think you might be living in my house!

I always have to crop photos, although there are still carpet stains and worktop clutter visible, along with tangles of cable, dirty mugs, cat toys, and more. I have one video that I hesitated to put on Youtube because it featured one of the cats galumphing up and down the stairs in sunshine, and the cloud of dust she kicked up was just plain embarrassing.

But are you happy in your home? Is it a comfortable, welcoming, safe harbour? That's what really matters. Sod the mess and the dishes!

  7. If it's any consolation, any "inside" pictures here are carefully staged. In reality, whenever there's a knock at the door, we have to hide behind the sofa. Messy? It's my middle name.

  8. You are a nice kind lot... I now have visions of cats galloping amok and Liz leaping behind her sofa! lol

when my sister reads this she will be shaking her head and laughing "if they only knew..." lol

I think I shall find a nice tablecloth and actually iron something for a change !(whispering here as oh doesn't know I know how to turn it on) and all photos will be taken (with the said cloth as backdrop) on the kitchen table and only you my friends will know the truth!

from an old gravestone

If you hold your nose to the Grindstone
and you leave it there long enough,
Then soon you'll say
there's no such things
as brooks that babble
and birds that sing,
these three will all your world compose,
just you, the stone and your poor old nose.

(from memory so may not be word perfect)
