Book Challenge for the New Year

Ok a first I'm going to try a book challenge not usually a me thing but it looks fun and manageable and may well introduce me to lots of new authors...lovely

click here to read all about it

Details:

1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.

2. There are four levels:

"Put The Kettle On" – Read 2 Typically British novels.
"Gordon Bennett" – Read 4 Typically British novels.
"Bob's Your Uncle" – Read 6 Typically British novels.
"Cream Crackered" – Read 8 Typically British novels.
3. Any book format counts. Must be fiction not non-fiction.

4. You don't have to select your books ahead of time, you can just add them as you go. Also if you do list them upfront then you can change them, nothing is set in stone!
5. The books you choose can crossover into other challenges.

Ok I reckon I'll go for 8!

Sofar provisionally...

  2. Sounds interesting. Have you decided which book you'll start with?

  3. Collected Short Stories of Ngaio Marsh.. I think.. actually I know that'll be first as I spotted it in the library and it came home with me. I thought short stories would fit in better with available time/attention span ...I might actually get the gist of the story before falling asleep or having to make an essential item for a doll or soft toy "but strawberry puppy needs a coat mummy!"
and now I've dipped in and know that Alleyn is pronounce Allen according to Ms Marsh

  7. Just stopping by to say hello. I noticed in your favorite books that you listed Precious Bane by Mary Webb. I love that book, too. I bought a copy 25 years ago and still have it.

This is not a British book, but have you ever heard of Catherwood by Marly Youmans? It's quite a beautiful story in my opinion.

Precious bane is a lovely book isn't it.
Thanks for the book recommendation I'll have to check that one out as it's new to me. I love finding a new book!

  9. This sounds like fun! I'll watch with interest what everyone thinks is a typically British Book.

Your blog is new to me, and I'll be back for a good read. I share 3 of your favourites on your other book list - 3 Men In A Boat, Persuasion, and Precious Bane. (Where's Jane Eyre, though?)

from an old gravestone

If you hold your nose to the Grindstone
and you leave it there long enough,
Then soon you'll say
there's no such things
as brooks that babble
and birds that sing,
these three will all your world compose,
just you, the stone and your poor old nose.

(from memory so may not be word perfect)
