2011 Iditarod ceremonial start from Marc Lester on Vimeo.
It's Saturday the 5th of March tomorrow and that means it's the start of the Iditarod.
The Iditarod is often referred to as the last great race. It's a race between teams of dogs pulling sleds and a Musher from Anchorage/Wasilla to Nome that's about 1,000 miles in length and pretty darn tough to complete.
It's not a man's race or a woman's race is a one tough human plus a team of keen tough dogs race... and the teams of Vets at each checkpoint look out for the dogs...they really love to race though, you should see them set off!
Here's where they go...this is from the ADN for their real interactive map go here

Can Lance Mackay do it again?
He has won four times can he make it 5 see what the local paper has to say ADN
Or will a Rookie make history ?
We'll be out to see the start...the first section starts downtown and follows the parks and greenbelt . We usually watch on the trail as it passes near where we live.
On Sunday they restart away from the crowds and the race is on!
I met someone when we were in Churchill who takes part in the Iditerod. We had a go at sledding with some of his dogs. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteYou're not taking part this year? Maybe next. I guess you'd need a bigger team than just furry dog.
ReplyDeleteIt must be an amazing sport to take part in.
My husband's asleep, otherwise I'd go get him to read this. He's always thought the Iditarod to be fascinating. We'll be back.
