What would you read if you were camping in the Wilds for 2 or 3 weeks at a time?

So far we have read

The Lord of the Rings J.R.R Tolkein .....Popular with all
Treasure Island R.L.Stevenson ....More popular with Adults
Swiss Family Robinson .....the start only.... failed the test (penguins and flamingos flying round their heads)
The Scarlet Pimpernel.... Baroness Orzcy
Robinson Crusoe....Daniel Defoe
Great Expectations...Charles Dickens
Journey to the Center of the Earth...Jules Verne (not finished yet ..due to running out of holiday)

  1. Gosh, I remember falling in love with The Scarlet Pimpernel as a teen. Thought it was *wonderful* And Lost Horizons... must get that one and reread to see if I still love it. I remember reading Journey to the Centre of the Earth and liking it but found another JV, started a couple of years ago, unreadable. Some authors don't stand the test of time I find.

    1. Some just don't work do they..they sometimes work better as a read aloud not least because the audience doesn't want to stop at passages I'd be ready to quit at! and when we get past that bit it improves ? sometimes it's the book sometimes I think it's my reading stamina? I know I listen to classics far more than I read them nowadays.

from an old gravestone

If you hold your nose to the Grindstone
and you leave it there long enough,
Then soon you'll say
there's no such things
as brooks that babble
and birds that sing,
these three will all your world compose,
just you, the stone and your poor old nose.

(from memory so may not be word perfect)
