Fur Rondy

Weekend outing....

It's Fur Rondy this weekend and next..you can read about it's history  here

and the programme for this year is here

We piled onto the bus on a rather cold but sunny Saturday and found out how many people thought of doing the same! The traffic was gridlocked but the bus was warm .. we didn't manage to watch the races this year (we were still on the bus!) but this is what happened news article

So we went for a carriage ride as a treat instead and met Barney and Bob :0) they are beautiful Percherons. Bob is 18 and Barney 17 or was it the other way around? They were not phased by close traffic and the carriage had a thick warm rug for our knees...just what we needed.

Then it was a quick look at the course and the dog trucks...

Then off to the Museum for a fun event ... travel around the World and get stamps on your passport all indoors in the warm! ....listen to music and watch the dancers. It was fun, full and interesting.

 Younger dancers
 Visit Tonga
 Make Origami Peace cranes
 Wear a sparkling Bindi mark
Make sure you complete your crane (we made more when we got home..well BK did!)
Have you name painted/written in Korean
Try on an ornate Korean Wig (it was I'm assured very heavy)

Then home on the bus (via the library ) and tea by the fire.
A Good day out.

  2. It was fun! Town was really, really busy but the atmosphere was friendly so it was "nice busy" rather than frantic :0)

  3. Boy! I'll say that was a good day out! The girls are adorable. Is the Anchorage Museum always so kid friendly, or was this a special occasion?

  4. this was a special occasion (and a free day) but we're very lucky as It's always Kid friendly Jodi ...last weekend was ordinary but they got to examine live starfish and a huge crab and sea cucumbers in the salt water tank...we have a family membership so can visit for just a short time if we wish but usually stay for a few hours :0)

  5. What a great day out. Sorry you missed the races, but the museum visit looks fab! I'm not surprised the girls had a good time.

  6. The Museum is a great place for a visit Cheryl and hosts quite a few fun events through out the year..it has a large Child friendly section called "the imaginarium" which has a lot of hands on science activities.
We'll have to try and watch the start of the Iditarod this weekend to satisfy our need to see Dogs pulling sleds and if we dress up warm we can go and see the Snow sculptures too (we will try and take some pictures)

from an old gravestone

If you hold your nose to the Grindstone
and you leave it there long enough,
Then soon you'll say
there's no such things
as brooks that babble
and birds that sing,
these three will all your world compose,
just you, the stone and your poor old nose.

(from memory so may not be word perfect)
