Just a small glimpse ....there is a float plane (tiny dot on right) that was struggling to take off from the Lake...it may look small but it's noisy I'm afraid.
Face of Glacier starts to come into view at around 21 secs and then you can see the face.
It's riddled with crevices. A sightseeing plane that was forced to land on the Glacier a few weeks after this was taken did well to remain unscathed (Well the plane flipped but everyone was rescued without serious injuries)see here
Just thinking of traveling in such a small plane frightens me. Imagining a crash landing on a glacier with all its crevices, what brave pilots!

ReplyDeleteIt's been a bad year for small plane crashes but without them a lot of people wouldn't get to see much of the state or even get where they needed to go as there are so few roads.
ReplyDeleteI haven't flown in one for a few years but when we lived in the panhandle of Alaska we had to fly to go to the doctors etc ...I found it was easier to cope with if I reminded myself that the air was like the sea and it was rather like being in a small boat... that and wear the hearing protectors!
Generally they were a very friendly way to travel but timetables were often not relevant as you sat in the small office while the desk girl nipped in and out to stare at the sky waiting for the cloud cover to lift enough for a go...so some days you didn't ..lol
