(A bit more) Summer at Eklutna

Eklutna is a glacial fed lake that is smaller in the spring than in the Autumn
the above photo was taken in July by the end of August all the eel grass area you can see has been covered by several feet of water.
Eklutna has several inviting trails

So if you have energy you can run about
through woodland

Look at the Mountains...

or...

along the lakeside trail ..it's seven miles long from campground to campground..there are campgrounds at either end of the lake, to get to the far campground you must walk, bike, ride a horse or travel by 4 wheeler (allowed on the trail Sunday to Wednesday..I think) or you can Kayak or canoe down the lake.

We are lucky and have two tandam Kayaks
so are starting to explore the lake

I'm a beginner so far prefer the lake when it's pretending to be a mirror!
We paddle for a while (well some of us do!)
then find a nice spot to build a shelter

Make tea and cook hot dogs and smores

it's best not to overcook the marshmallow...
then you paddle back to the campground play cards
(Gin rummy for the grownups, Go-fish and Old Maid for all)

then an evening stroll by the lakeside before bed.

  1. This looks so peaceful and beautiful, the perfect holiday venue. I have had lovely lakeside holidays in Scotland but always suffered from the midges, which seem to favour my blood type! I hope you are midge-free in Alaska. Thanks for sharing the view.

  2. actually...I have to confess it has been suggested that the Mosquito is the Alaska state bird!
which is why my Sister visits in the Winter..lol

  3. Perhaps I won't make the trip after all!
There's a little award waiting for you over at my place, if you would like it.

  4. You shouldn't let mosquitoes the size of 747's put you off you know...where is your sense of adventure..just think of it as big game hunting (without the guilt)lol

  5. I've been told that Avon perfumes (do you remember "Avon calling?) are the only deterrents for Scottish midges. Perhaps they do gallon bottles for Alaska!

(Oh, the word verification is ABORT. I wonder if I am meant to scrap this comment?)

  6. "Skin so soft" by Avon yes they are still around and yes it does work (I'd just clean forgotton about it!) Thanks Monix

I'd ignore the word verification if I were you it sometimes says the most peculiar things to me

from an old gravestone

If you hold your nose to the Grindstone
and you leave it there long enough,
Then soon you'll say
there's no such things
as brooks that babble
and birds that sing,
these three will all your world compose,
just you, the stone and your poor old nose.

(from memory so may not be word perfect)
